Pediatric Manual Therapy
Pediatric Manual Therapy
Manual therapy can be fantastic for kiddos, who usually respond to treatment much more quickly than adults do. The use of lymphatic or gentle visceral techniques is sometimes indicated, but I primarily use craniosacral therapy (CST) and nervous system techniques when working with children. The treatment is non-invasive and uses light touch, and kids always remain fully clothed. I ask that a parent remain in the room for the duration of the session so that young ones feel safe, and so that parents can learn about the process and ask questions. I work with kids as young as two years old, but please let me know if you would referrals for infant care, which can be very useful for tongue-tie, latching issues and more.
If your child has quite complex medical conditions, please be sure to check in with their primary care doctor regarding manual therapy before scheduling. You can reach out to me with any questions you may have regarding the treatment of unique medical circumstances.
Potential benefits include:
- Stress and anxiety: Many children experience stress or anxiety, and CST can provide a calming effect. This calming effect can also help kids who have difficulty sleeping through the night.
- Difficult births: Craniosacral techniques can help unwind tension related to birth circumstances, especially in the case of challenging births in which medical interventions were necessary. We can enhance the mobility of cranial bones and the overall flexibility and resiliency of the nervous system, which may have been challenged during the birth process. Mechanical restrictions related to birth may remain present for many years after a baby is born (sometimes into adulthood), so providing early treatment is wonderful.
- Behavioral difficulties: Many parents report improvements in their child's attention and mood after treatment.
- Physical conditions: CST may be beneficial for children with headaches, digestive issues, or structural discomfort.
- Developmental concerns: It can support children with developmental delays or physical and neurological coordination issues, including retained neonatal reflexes.
- Trauma recovery: This therapeutic work can be helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional trauma.
