Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle approach that supports the whole body by releasing restrictions and dysfunctions related to the nervous system. The craniosacral system is a part of the central nervous system that protects the brain and spinal cord from injury and keeps them buoyant within the cranium and spine, thanks to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is a special water-like substance that not only provides structural support but also nourishes the spinal cord, nerves and brain and removes their cellular and metabolic waste products; it can be conceptualized as the nourisher, protector and waste eliminator of the central nervous system. It is important to restore vitality to the nervous system’s rhythmic movement so that our CSF is able to flow as freely as possible.
By unwinding tension within and between the cranial bones, we can increase this flow of cerebrospinal fluid. Doing so also helps in managing restrictions along the spine and within the peripheral nervous system, which can alleviate painful musculoskeletal symptoms. Furthermore, it’s been postulated that this type of bodywork improves immune function by facilitating better circulation of immune cells and nutrients throughout the body.
The craniosacral system, including the dural tube of the spine and brain, are at the core of our body’s fascial system. Because of this, assessing the motion and quality of the rhythm throughout the body can guide us to work deeply with the body and provide long-lasting benefits. Although the potential applications are vast, this therapy is frequently used to treat depression, stress, anxiety, whiplash, concussions, TMJ and jaw issues, migraines and headaches, sleep difficulties, pediatric concerns, and rehabilitation from injuries and auto accidents. It is extremely gentle and relaxing, and thus can work wonders to help clients who have had traumatic or painful life experiences, which may have been physical, psychological, emotional or spiritual in origin. People of all ages can enjoy the restorative and regulating effects of CST treatments.
Potential benefits of CST
- Migraines and Tension Headaches: CST can help release tension in the head and neck, potentially reducing the frequency and intensity of headaches.
- Whiplash and Neck Injuries: After an injury, CST may aid in reducing pain and restoring mobility by addressing soft tissue restrictions.
- Chronic ear Infections and Tinnitus: CST can sometimes alleviate pressure and tension in the cranial area, potentially helping with ear-related issues.
- Sleep Disorders: People with insomnia or sleep disturbances may experience improved sleep patterns after sessions
- Emotional Processing: Individuals working through grief or trauma may find that CST helps them process emotions more effectively, leading to greater emotional resilience.
- Digestive Issues: Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can sometimes improve with CST, as the therapy may help relieve tension in the abdominal area.
- Post-Surgery Recovery: CST can facilitate healing and reduce scar tissue formation, improving recovery time and comfort.
