Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation

Visceral Manipulation, founded by Jean-Pierre Barral, is a therapeutic technique that focuses on the gentle manual mobilization of the internal organs (also known as viscera) and their fascial networks to enhance their functions and alleviate deep, central restrictions in the body’s structural matrix. This approach is based on the understanding that the organs and their surrounding connective tissues can become tense or misaligned due to trauma, whiplash, infection, surgery, poor posture or chronic stress, to name a few examples. When our organs, several of which are vital to our survival, suffer in such a way, our intelligent bodies will do the best they can to accommodate and protect the organs via myofascial, skeletal and nerve “guarding.” This can result in muscular or joint pain, and it’s important to note that our symptomatic pains may not be directly adjacent to the site of a primary organ restriction.

Another foundational premise of Visceral Manipulation is that all of our organs and tissues must have the ability to move freely within their supported environments; we refer to this as their ability to “slide and glide” against each other. Regardless of how flexible a spine may be, if organs didn’t have the ability to slide and glide against one another, we wouldn’t be able to bend our trunks or accommodate a growing baby during pregnancy.  From the expansion and contraction of our ribcage as our lungs exchange gases with every breath, to the pumping of our hearts (which beat 2.5 billion times in an average lifetime), to the peristaltic waves that transport food, urine and bile, there is an unfathomable amount of movement occurring within our bodies at all times. If the tissues surrounding our organs become dry, brittle and adhered, the organs no longer exist in an environment that fosters adequate movement, nutrient absorption or cellular waste removal.

By applying specific pressure and gentle movements, we can help to release these restrictions in our organ’s ligamentous system (which is comprised of many layers of fascia), improve the mobility and motility of the organs, increase their circulatory capacity and help restore their optimal functioning – all while alleviating painful protective mechanisms and structural discomfort.

Thus, the goal of visceral manipulation is to support the body’s natural healing processes by giving direct support to some of our deeper, crucial adhesions – around which the entire body may be compensating. In doing so, we inherently address issues such as digestive discomfort, chronic pain, post-surgical tissue trauma and much more.

The benefits of Visceral Manipulation may include:

Because this holistic technique emphasizes the interrelationship between the organs and their surrounding structures, it can help to harmonize and restore your body’s internal balance from deep within.  The technique itself is gentle and may feel subtle, but it can have a powerful effects for entire body.
